Degree to be earned by High School Graduation: Associate of Science-Pre-Vet Cisco College
Are you passionate about animal health and welfare? If so, our Pre-Vet/Animal Science program may be the perfect fit for you. You’ll explore the anatomy and behavior of animals while also developing a strong understanding of biology and chemistry. Our program will prepare you for veterinary school and various careers working with animals.
What is an LVT?
Have you ever wondered who the person is that starts your pet’s veterinary appointment? Have you looked at their credentials and wondered what LVT means? LVT stands for Licensed Veterinary Technicians. They share many similarities in skills and training to their nurse counterpart in human medicine and are taught to help a variety of species including dogs, cats, horses, cows, sheep and lab animals.
At Hamlin, students are able to graduate from our AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) accredited program. This means they will have earned their associates degree and can start working or go on to pursue a bachelors degree.

- assist in surgery
- place IV and urinary catheters
- draw blood
- perform dental cleanings
- take x-rays including dental x-rays
- provide proper pain control including local blocks
- complete diagnostic tests including blood profiles, complete blood counts, urinalysis, check for intestinal parasites and external parasites, skin cytologies, fungal cultures
- take patient histories
- perform physical exams
- administer vaccines and medications
- take care of hospitalized patients
- triage emergency situations and phone calls
- perform eye tests
- calculate nutritional needs and make dietary recommendations

What Does a Certified Nursing Assistant Do?
Certified Nursing Assistants commonly work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or other medical professional.
On any given day, a Certified Nursing Assistant will be responsible for:
- Attending to the needs of multiple patients
- Aiding patients with routine tasks, including eating, bathing, dressing and exercise
- Observing and recording patient conditions and vital signs
- Monitoring patient food and liquid intake
- Updating care team on changes in patient condition
As Certified Nursing Assistants gain experience and training, they may take on additional responsibilities, including dispensing medicine.
The Pre-Nursing program at Hamlin is designed to prepare students to earn a CNA certification. From there, graduates can choose to work or transfer into a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at a four-year college or university.
Our students complete general education courses, biological and physical science courses, social science courses, behavioral science courses, and other support courses required. Students who complete the requirements for the Pre-Nursing program at Hamlin are awarded an Associate in Science degree.
